Barbadian Chattel Houses

Chattel House is a Barbadian word which refers to a small moveable wooden house. The term dates back to plantation days when home owners would buy houses designed to move from one property to another. The word "chattel" means moveable property which is where Chattel House was derived from.

Inspired Interiors : The Beverly Hills Hotel

The Beverly Hills Hotel is known for the dusty pink of it's buildings and bungalows, the tufted pink velvet couches in the lobby and perhaps most of all the iconic Martinique wallpaper which has been the inspiration for not only interior designers but fashion designers as well. "Martinique" was created especially for The Beverly Hills Hotel in 1942 and is one of the most recognizable wallpapers in the world with its distinctive design.

Decorating Tips

Last week Monday I shared some tips on how to update your space without changing the entire room or breaking the bank, today's tips can also be achieved on a small budget if required. Keep in mind that creativity is key and remember there is no rule to say that you cannot take a bed bench from the bedroom and substitute it for seating in the dining room so long as the proportions are correct.

1. Mix up seating
Substitute traditional dining room seating with mix matched chairs or add a banquette or bench.

Island Bags Barbados

As promised I will be featuring a little more Barbados on the blog starting with a feature every Friday. This Friday I'm super excited to feature local brand; Island Bags. Island bags allows you to take a bit of Barbados wherever you go in the form of a chic clutch, available in two sizes or an equally stylish makeup case. I personally was thrilled with the bags when they came out in late 2012 because they combined two of my loves - handbags and Barbados!

Beach House Perfection

I am in love with anything beach or beach house related and this space designed Ashley Gilbreath and photographed by Holland Williams is nothing short of perfection. I was so excited on Monday when the post popped up on my blog roll and I saw the first thumbnail image. I love their blog and being able to follow along as they embark on new projects and see the progress as time passes. A new favourite on the blog is the intern diaries of new intern Allie

Update your space.

Quite often my clients come to me with the same problem, they want a change but they are not willing to spend the amount of money associated with renovating or redecorating a whole new space. Luckily there are numerous ways to give your space an update without breaking the bank, some of which just require a bit of creativity and perhaps elbow grease. Some of my favourite affordable and simple ways to update a space are:

Santosha Barbados: Quiet Luxury

I originally went to Santosha to write a blog about the décor. Santosha is the perfect example of seamless indoor and outdoor living. The décor is a marriage of clean lines and light colours with natural elements and dark woods however the main attraction in my opinion is the location, the views and the lifestyle element that it holds.

Office Envy - Small Shop Studio

I'm not sure if it is because I work from home or that I am such a nerd but I am obsessed with office spaces and if it contains a Mac desktop computer, inspiration board or Parsons desk let the swooning begin.  I've been seeing this first image floating around the internet for a while and even pinned it to my Office Envy board on pinterest before knowing who the office belonged to and then discovered that it is the home office of Erika Brechtel. Erika is the creator of Small Shop Studio and a published and award winning graphic designer. She has been featured in print and online publications such as Luxe Mag and Glitter Guide and is a contributor to La Dolce Vita which is where I originally discovered the wonder of Small Shop Studio.

Outdoor Dining

Whether you live in the Caribbean or a cooler climate there is no denying it summer is almost here and it is the perfect opportunity to get outside. For those of you that have been following Love Design for a while you will know that I am a big fan of outdoor living as seen in the numerous posts but one thing I never posted about was outdoor dining. These outdoor spaces below are all very different but equally inspirational and full of good ideas. No matter your location in the world or if you are under a gazebo or under a tree the most important things for a successful outdoor dinner party is good food, friends and conversation.

Designer Profile: Jeffrey Alan Marks

I'm embarrassed to say that before my obsession with Million Dollar Decorators I did not know about Jeffrey Allan Marks or Mr. Ross Cassidy who might I mention deserves his own post. In season one JAM wowed us with the transformation of Hungry Cat and then in Season 2 satisfied the audience with back to back incredible spaces, my personal favourite being the project done with all catalogue items (minus a few splurges). Apart from being incredibly charming and talented on television JAM also found time to write a book titled Jeffrey Alan Marks :The Meaning of Home, the book is available for pre order on Amazon and will be out on September 13th of this year. And just incase being a cast member on MDD, Interior Designer and Author was not enough JAM can now add furniture designer to his resume.

Beach Bum

I have been meaning to get to the beach for over a week now and every day I promise myself that I will schedule in "beach time". This week one of the items on my to do list is go to the beach and I really have no excuse as Barbados has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and I live about five minutes away from three or four of them. Some of my beach essentials are a beach chair, oversized beach towel, big bottle of water, magazines such as Coastal Living and House Beautiful and a big hat to shade the sun.
